Burrrrrr…it is cold outside around here!  Kids are home from school today due to the arctic conditions.  Yes, it is getting to the point where I am so over winter.  It is a good time to be inside quilting or snuggled under a nice warm quilt.  I think I have the perfect quilt to show that fits the bill.  Another quilt from the book Flannel Gatherings, Log Jam.

It is big and soft and just screams “comfort!” πŸ™‚

The quilting is a completely freehand mixture of designs with a gorgeous feather in the border.  I truly believe not all quilts need to have heavy, fancy schmancy quilting.  Yes, I said it!  The quilting is random doodles, feathers, swirls, paisleys…feathered paisleys that fill the space.  The batting is Dream Orient from Quilters Dream Batting.  All threads are So Fine from Superior Threads.

As I was quilting out the design.  Completely random.  Just having fun filling the space. πŸ™‚  Creating cool texture was my goal.

I love how the feather border turned out.  I changed it up slightly and kind of “pooled” the feathers in the corners.

I used chalk to draw out the feather spine before I loaded the top.

A few of the back.  I love it when all you see is the texture created from the quilting.

Again this quilt pattern is in the book Flannel Gatherings.  The book and the quilt kit are available here.

And if you look in the book, you will see “you know who” and my tips on quilting with flannel and wool applique. πŸ™‚

Speaking of flannel quilts, if you are headed to the Road To California Quilt Show, you may see this…

Yes, that is Portland Rose with a 2nd Place ribbon on it!!!  It is the first time I have ever submitted a quilt myself.  When I received the email the other night, Lisa and I were thrilled…like we had won best of show! lol  We didn’t have any expectations going into it, so this was awesome!  Trust me, when I was quilting PR, I just wanted to meet the book deadline and finish.  I thought I would never get all the mirco quilting finished!!!  I talked about quilting Portland Rose here.  I wasn’t even thinking about a quilt show, which makes this even sweeter.

I was fortunate to have Lisa and some Instagram friends send me photos.  I got a kick out of the Homer, MI being on there!!  I love my small town. πŸ™‚

Wishing everyone a warm weekend!

I can't believe it's so cold where you are and it's dry and spring like in my neck of the woods. It boggles the mind.
Congrats on your ribbon! And the book!

I love the design you did, would never to think to do something like that on a log cabin, really adds a lot of movement. And congratulations on having your quilting in the show and the ribbon.

Congrats to you and Lisa on your 2nd place—-always interested in what judges say—-why didn't it win 1st? Your quilting is beautiful as always and good to see that you do "plain" not everyone can afford the fancy work.

Yippie for you! That fantastic news, you deserve it.
Oh I love the name of the flannel quilt "Log Jam' it looks so cosy & warm……..not what I need here in NZ…….hot summer! I will swap you seasons, I am a winter lover……………I don't get winters like you though, no snow in the north. The odd frost is as cold as it gets here in winter…….Love your feather BTW.

I have always wanted to make a flannel quilt, yours looks so snug, the quilting is beautiful too. I will check the link and get the book. Congratulations on your ribbon, your winning quilt is amazing!

There are times when the perfect quilt and the perfect quilting hit Homer-runs! :o) Portland Rose is one of those. Congratulations to you both. I love the wintry swirls on Log Jam.

  • Cathy says:

Bravo….I would have given the quilt a 1st place. Fantastic quilting. I'm with you on winter. I can't remember when it was this cold in Michigan for this long. Hugs

I love flannel quilts and yours is just gorgeous!
I love the cover of your book too πŸ™‚ I may get the book but this retired lady will have to use her stash to assemble from it.
    Great job on the ribbon!!!

Congratulations again! So deserved , this price for this quilt. Love this log jam quilt too. Such wonderful colors and yes, 'Linda'feathers!!
Hope your winter will be over soon, the US is having a hard time with it, I have been reading and seeing on tv. In contrast we are having one of the mildest winters in a long time, so far only 1 night of frost and no snow. I think I read one actually has to do with the other (the polar vortex pushing warmer weather further away than usual, this is towards us), so I am sorry you are suffering your terrible winter…..Keep quilting!

Beautiful quilting on Log Jam and congrats on your ribbon for PR. That quilting and esign is fantastic. What a nice honor and surprise for you. Wish I had your flannel quilt here now cause it's been very, very cold here in MO too. I don't think there are enough flannels in my stash to make one that big, but I might just try!

Congrats Linda, I think this is the quilt I saw at market and just stared at it in awe! You and Lisa make a great team. Love the quilting on the flannel quilt also. You are so inspiring. And thanks for sharing, Kelly

  • Michele says:

I love all the various quilting designs in that quilt. And congrats on the ribbon. I'm sure you are flying high on the clouds on that news.

  • Wonky Girl says:

Oh I sure like the Log Jam quilt and the quilting on it. I am not a free motion quilter, pantos are what work for me. Gosh, if you turned your " random doodling paisley and swirls" into a panto pattern I would be the first to purchase it!
