In some aspects I feel way ahead of the game, in others I am overwhelming behind!! LOL!!!  In regards to this year’s Summer Block of the Week and Freebie for Primitive Gatherings designed by Lisa Bongean, I am waaaaayyyyyy ahead compared to previous years!  Usually I do not get them until fall to quilt, so Lisa is way ahead too!!!  Sunflower Gatherings is the 2014 Summer Block of the Week available here and in my opinion the most beautiful (mine and Lisa’s best work) one yet in the series!!!   I have plenty of photos to share, so I will let them do the talking. 🙂

Gorgeous wool applique on cotton.  I quilted gorgeous feathers throughout the quilt.

Straight lines and curved cross hatching to create a beautiful frame around the quilt.  Each block is uniquely quilted as each block is different and unique.

I quilted on the wool applique where necessary.  It adds a wonderful touch and dimension.

A little cross hatching and quilting on the birds is a wonderful addition.

Adding a little quilting to the watering can is an added detail, but also functional.  It helps keep the applique from puckering or puffing out too much.

Straight lines are quilted in the “chains” around the blocks with a new block created in the quilting between the blocks.

I cannot pick a favorite part of the quilt, however I do LOVE how the borders turned out!!

The top of the quilt, I added above the sunflowers a beautiful curved cross hatched design with feathers.

Lots of swirly pebbles, feathers and straight lines!!

I think it is always cool to see the quilt before quilting.

The back was gorgeous, but the lighting made it difficult to capture the quilting.  Now for specifics on the quilt….I used So Fine and Bottom Line by Superior.  I also tried a thread called Wonderfil for some stitch in the ditch and in the bobbin.  It is a VERY fine thread, 100wt.  It worked well!  I will experiment some more with it.  Batting is a double layer of Dream Orient by Quilters Dream Batting.

And one pretty photo in the sun. 🙂
